Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

LMTTX3019A - Identify and correct mechanical faults in loom and other weaving equipment

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Determine the cause of loom or related weaving equipment breakdowns

  1. Operator is consulted on loom operation and condition prior to breakdown
  2. Visual check is made of the loom and woven product for any obvious damage or faulty mechanical components
  3. Fault finding skills are used to determine cause of loom breakdown
  4. Loom engineering drawings, product specifications and operation manual are consulted where necessary

Instructions to Assessors

Evidence Guide

The Evidence Guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Critical aspects of evidence to be considered

Demonstrates skills and knowledge to:

interpret appropriate documentation including where necessary standard operating procedures, loom and related equipment specifications, operating guidelines, workshop manuals and technical drawings

determine the condition of parts

identify faults and determine appropriate repair strategies

set loom correctly

operate loom safely and correctly

perform sample runs

make appropriate readjustments

apply workplace health and safety policies in production operations

maintain accurate records

Consistency in performance

Consistently applies skills and knowledge when:

organising work

completing tasks

identifying improvements

using workplace practices

using OHS practices

recording and reporting accidents and incidents

assessing operational readiness of equipment used and work processes

recognising and adapting to cultural differences in the workplace, including modes of behaviour and interactions

completing work systematically with attention to detail without damage to goods and equipment

Resource implications

Access is required to real or appropriately simulated situations, including work areas, materials and equipment, and to information on workplace practices and OHS practices.

Context for assessment

Assessment may occur on the job or in an appropriately simulated environment.

Interdependent Assessment

This unit may be assessed independently or in combination with other relevant units.

Required Skills and Knowledge

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level, required for this unit.

Demonstrates knowledge of:

loom components and loom operation

textile terminology and weaving theory

setting up and adjustment requirements for the range of looms and equipment in the enterprise and the range of woven textiles produced

machine manufacturer specifications

safety and environmental aspects of relevant enterprise activities

OHS practices, including hazard identification and control measures

quality practices

workplace practices

recording and reporting practices

Demonstrates skills to:

set and operate looms and other textile machines

use appropriate hand and power tools and workshop machinery appropriate for loom part or equipment repair

dismantle, repair and replace loom and related weaving equipment components

operate primary mechanisms, eg shed forming, weft insertion, beat up, let off and take up

test loom performance

read, interpret and follow information on work specifications, standard operating procedures and work instructions and other reference material

maintain accurate records

communicate within the workplace

sequence operations

meet specifications

clarify and check task-related information

carry our work according to OHS practices

Range Statement

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the Performance Criteria, is detailed below. Add any essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment depending on the work situation, needs if the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts.
